In order to see how many people are accessing your site, and from which referrer URL, add Sitemeter to your site. You just need to create an account on sitemeter (free) and then add the appropriate code to your template.

If you are creating a site that is regionally-specific, you may want to include the region's weather. If US-based, go to weather.com and complete their web-based form to grab some code to include in your blog template.
I was a little 'surprised' that no one in the two classes seemed to have heard of Webvan which is, in my opinion, the poster child for what was all wrong with internet investment in the late 1990s.
