In order to see how many people are accessing your site, and from which referrer URL, add Sitemeter to your site. You just need to create an account on sitemeter (free) and then add the appropriate code to your template.

If you are creating a site that is regionally-specific, you may want to include the region's weather. If US-based, go to weather.com and complete their web-based form to grab some code to include in your blog template.

Its kinda crazy that when I added the WSJ to my feeds, you can link it to your WSJ.com homepage if you subscribe to the journal online. I'm sure it would work for other sites too.
