In order to see how many people are accessing your site, and from which referrer URL, add Sitemeter to your site. You just need to create an account on sitemeter (free) and then add the appropriate code to your template.

If you are creating a site that is regionally-specific, you may want to include the region's weather. If US-based, go to weather.com and complete their web-based form to grab some code to include in your blog template.
As part of your blog project it will be important to link to blogs of similar themes in order to help build your community. While using google should enable you to find related blogs you can also try the following blog-specific search engines:
